2005 Women's Tri-Fitness World Challenge Contest Report

July 8-10, 2005 - by genex hwang

Las Vegas, NV, USA - The Monte Carlo Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas strip was again host to the Women's Tri-Fitness World Challenge and there were over 200 female athletes of all ages competing.

The Women's Tri-Fitness events are comprised of several events, all of which are optional.

The first even was the Grace and Physique round which is similar to a figure competition. The athletes are not judged as much on conditioning as they are in the NPC and IFBB, but the four categories instead are: 1) symmetry, 2) feminine firmness, 3) grace & poise and 4) overall appearance.

There are also age divisions and within the age divisions, when necessary, two height classes - 5'4" and under, and over 5'4".

Other events include the obstacle course, fitness routines, and the fitness skills competition. Within the fitness skills competition, there are three events: 1) shuttle run, 2) bench press and 3) box jump. In previous years, the shuttle run was the last event but this time around, it was the box jump, which is one of the most exhausting events, and it was quite evident when the athletes were finishing it out, just how much energy they had expended over the weekend up until that point.

The consensus opinion from the athletes competing was that it was an enjoyable, supportive competition environment with a familial feel to it.

Sandra Augustin's S.A.S.S. team did quite well with Augustin herself winning the overall Tri-Fitness title. Like in other federations, there were quite a few 'teams' with their leaders all present as well.

Darla Benfield's Fitness-4-You team also had great placings with Arlene Lurey making multiple top tens and Coach Atherton had numerous athletes in the competition from his A-TeamXtreme.

Atherton has coached a lot of top name competitors and even has his own competition coming up, the Bubba's Xtreme Challenge.

Since there were a plethora of individual events and over 200 women competing, only the results of the overalls are posted below. The full results and detail on the athletes can be found on the Women's Tri-Fitness website.

Some of the notable physiques from the weekend included Janis Louie, a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Utah. Louie had some of the most impressive muscularity and her legs were tops.

In the 18-24 group, Heidi Charest and Janelle Haney had nice looks to them. If Haney comes in a bit tighter she'll look really impressive as her overall presence and poise compliment her striking eyes.

The 25-29 year old class was stacked with great athletes. Angie Lustrick showed nice muscle bellies, Julianna Funk had a tight midsection, professional softball player Jeannette Coachell looked impressive, and top finishers Amy Perry and Sandy Kannelos both were lean and tight.

Louie was in the 30-34 class which also has other impressive physiques like that of Jenny Ermish-Williams who was sleek and lean, Cecilia Santos, a firefighter from Miami, Jenny Chen-Edwards who's genetics and symmetry were notable and Amy Pearce and Arianna Kelly. Kelly had nice muscularity and was lean while Neely Simmons looked very buff and may have been a bodybuilder before. Lisa Thomas had very nice calves and was also lean and happened to be enjoying her 13th wedding anniversary during the weekend.

Age can be defied with weight training and the women in the 35-39 class definitely didn't look their age. Gina Ellis and Dionne Miller both have nice shape and symmetry. Patty Franklin showed nice mature muscularity and Sandra Augustin of course showed that you can be any age and still be competitive.

Susie Hoverson showed nice thickness while Gretchen Ritter also looked nicely buffed out. A former swimmer, you could tell that she has been athletic all her life. In the over 40 class, Donna Hawley had an impressive physique with nice muscularity and Paula Jager, Mimi Zumwalt, Ann Groff and Kathleen Wilson were all impressive. Of course Francious Sullvian got a huge round of support as one of the oldest competitors.

Routines were also quite impressive with notable performances from Bobbie McGeragle, Adriane Kulvinskas, Kristina West, Amy Perry, Angela Glenn, Tiffany Ray, Lisa Thomas, Pattry Franklin, Sandra Augustin, Nancy Wrenn, Arlene Lurie, Janis Louie and Sherilyn Roy.

The fitness skills were hard to assess so looking at the results is the best way to see who did well. There were a few injuries on the obstacle course, but many of the athletes were troopers and some even had to be carried on stage to compete in events like the bench press. That kind of attitude was commonplace over the arc of the weekend and seeing the functional aspects of a muscular physique was much more entertaining than just quarter turns.
