Rosemont,
IL, USA - Fitness
might have been the big story at the 2007 NPC Jr Nationals as for the
first time in a while, the fitness competition was stepped up.
Figure has seemingly taken away from fitness and perhaps
bodybuilding too for quite some time, but this years fitness athletes
were impressive and deep in quality. Overall winner Tina
Drukin
was very deserving and another crossover from figure, Traci Redding
made a big splash in her national-level fitness debut.
And
in figure, it was Jennifer Gates who was ten pounds lighter than when
she took the stage just one year earlier. Looking fantastic
she
edged Huong Arcinas who's been a top contender too. Amy
Thompson
took the B class, Brenda Marie Smith won C, and Melissa Pearo won D.
Popular figure competitor Krissy Chin took the runner up spot
to
Pearo who came in a little softer than she has been in the past, but
that is exactly what the judges were looking for.
The
E class might have had the hottest new face in Veronica Miller.
She placed second to Tana Clough who was just about perfect.
Miller is a Cajun girl from Louisiana and made an impressive
National level debut and did not go unnoticed many in the audience.
In the F Class, it was finally Jessica Wright's time.
With
four pro cards it was a bit odd that only two of the class winners were
not turning pro, but both Thompson and Wright should be primed to make
the jump to the IFBB soon, especially if they are planning to compete
in New York in a month at Figure Nationals.
Bodybuilding
may not have the numbers they had in the past, but during the overall
you would have seen some impressive and balanced physiques.
It
all started in the lightweight class where recent
figure-to-bodybuilding convert Lori Steele stormed to the class title
with a nice balanced physique. Second went to another
convert,
Suzanne Germano who was the most muscular of all the lightweights.
Sharon Garrett made her National level debut and was super
tight.
Natalie Barnett rounded out the class before the
middleweights
took the stage.
The
middleweight physiques were varying with Wanda Moore being the hardest
in the class. Colleen Mahony-Sgro looks to have a good future
in
the sport and Carrie Simmons and Jamie-Leigh Terrill completed the
class.
Tracy
Toth from Michigan was the light heavyweight winner and wowed the crowd
with her thick, dense muscularity. She was a deserving winner
and
was followed by a much improved Judy Gaillard who sported a nice new
look. Both were very balanced and carried their muscle well.
Justine Dohring was ripped and displayed an impressive
v-taper and wide back to take third, while Andree Allaire was fourth
followed by Anita Nelson.
When
the heavies took the stage, it was probably the most controversial even
though the winner was not. Diana MacPhee Cook looked
outstanding
with a tight waist, great muscularity throughout and an impressive
overall presentation. Second went to Kim Bergmann from
Alabama
with her incredible shape and another Southerner, Angela Rayburn took
third. Rayburn seemed to look better and better throughout
the
competition, but the biggest athlete and the most surprising placing
was that of Robyn Mentgen.
From
Illinois, Mentgen had taken some time off and added a lot of mass.
She was also the hardest competitor in the class and many
thought
she would have placed second so when she was announced in fourth, the
crowd made it's most fervent response with a chorus of boos.
Oakland's Giulia Divina was another big heavyweight and she
rounded out the top five in the biggest class of the competition.
In
the overall, it was Diana MacPhee Cook taking the title and some strong
momentum going into the USAs
in July.
