2007 Emerald Cup Contest Report
April 20-21
2007 - by gene x hwang
Bellevue, WA, USA - The 25th Emerald Cup was one of the biggest and best yet with a sold out Meydenbauer possibly hosting it's last competition. Now at two full days, the number of athletes might not have been an all-time high, but the quality was there.
Following in the tradition of greats to win overall titles were Cindy Johnson in women's bodybuilding, Michelle Mayberry in fitness and Erin Heath in figure. On hand were also the first time overall champions for each of those categories including Dianna Mull who won the first women's bodybuilding title and hadn't been back to the show since she won that competition 25 years ago.
Dale Tomita, the first fitness champion and an IFBB Pro was there five months pregnant but with those notable calves still intact. And of course Sandy Grant, and IFBB Fitness and Figure Pro was there and handed out tiaras on Friday night.
Friday was a busy day with prejudging for fitness and figure starting out around noon. Fitness was boosted maybe due to Tanji Johnson's "Save Fitness" campaign. Michelle Mayberry took the overall fitness title edging short class winner Chandra Young. A promising newcomer is Kristina Lum who had a nice routine but just needed to be a bit tighter in the physique rounds.
Figure had seven classes with most being separated by just one inch. The class winners were fantastic though and the overall was a tough choice for the judges. Erin Heath ended up winning and now is destined to turn pro as the legacy of past Emerald Cup champions has been.
Bodybuilding took over Saturday and while the classes may not have been huge (there were only three classes not four), the overall winners were solid. Kelly Dobbins returned to the competitive stage and was tight, in shape and a deserving winner. Genevieve Moreno crossed over and did figure as well, but looked better as a bodybuilder and looked to have more fun too.
In the middleweights, Cindy Johnson, a former California state champion took the class. She best out Leann George and Marga Martin. Martin did figure last year, and was one of the athletes with the best stage presence. Hopefully we will see more of Martin as she continues her bodybuilding career.
Finally in the heavies, it was another Cal champion, Becky West, who won the class. She edged out Shawna Walker who had come down in weight significantly from previous stage showings, but still looked great. Teresa Knoll from Alaska also looked great and Canadian Shawn Tan was in fourth just ahead of Merry Harris of Merry Christine Bodywear. The heavies was probably the closest call with a lot of strong physiques. Look for good things from everyone in the top of this class.
