2005 Europa Supershow Bodybuilding, Fitness and Figure Championships

September 16-17, 2005 - by genex hwang

Arlington, TX, USA - With two shows left to qualify for the Olympia, there were over 20 women competing in the pro womens bodybuilding event at the 2005 Europa Super Show hosted once again by Ed and Betty Pariso.

Last year Bonny Priest stormed to a decisive victory in her home state and once again, Priest was the class of the competition taking the overall title, this year edging out lightweight Tonia Williams.

Williams was making her pro debut and made a strong statement after taking a year off to train from her victory at the 2003 NPC Nationals in Miami, FL.

However, Williams was in a duel with Jeannie Paparone for the class title - that is, for the first half of the prejudging. After the individual athletes were brought out, they did their quarter turns in the 'symmetry' round and were compared to each other, but had not gone head-to-head and pose for pose.

The head judge announced to the women that they were finished with prejudging until the evening finals, although they hadn't done the 'muscularity' round yet. This apparent confusion resulted in Paparone leaving the competition venue to go back to her room and when they did bring out the class again, she was nowhere to be found, and subsequently was DQ'd. It didn't quite seem fair with Paparone definitely vying for the class title and 'O' qualification, but the beneficiary was Williams.

The eventual second and third placers, Tonie Norman and Susanne Neiderhauser were deserving athletes, and both displayed that great combination of femininity and muscularity that in the past had seemed more elusive in the pro ranks. Along with Williams, they combined for a fantastic top three and great representatives for the sport of women's bodybuilding.

Angela Debatin followed in fourth and Monica Martin took fifth with a very memorable, but possibly shocking routine that featured a red devilette outfit and routine. Klaudia Larson showcased her incredibly peaked biceps to take sixth and Vicki Nixon displayed another feminie physique with pleasant lines and was just a shade off on her conditioning but looked otherwise impressive.

In the heavies, outside of Priest, it was more a battle for second place, but freshly minted pro Kim Perez and Kim Harris battled each other and Marika Johansson. Perez got the nod with her unbelievable upper body size and thickness beating out Harris' more compact physique. Johansson showed grace and elegance in her posing routine and in general and all three were also great examples for womens bodybuilding.

Heather Foster had the final routine of the evening, but as usual had the crowd going right from the beginning when the voice over demanded respect for female bodybuilders and in typical Foster fashion had great moves, posing and energy. Foster wasn't dialed in tightly enough, and finished in fifth, but she beat out two other impressive competitors, Maria Calo and Annette Wittig.

Two others making their pro debuts were England's Wendy McCready who sports impressive biceps and shape, but wasn't hard enough, and Canada's Colette Guimond who turned pro the same weekend as Perez.

Fitness didn't include Julie Lohre who because of an injury sustained during practicing her routine, switched over to figure, but Tracey Greenwood won the show again beating out her close friend and the always underrated Stacey Simons. It looked like it might be Simons' year with a great physique presentation and an always entertaining routine but it was not to be.

Canada's Mindi O'Brien - last years winner on her debut, took third on the tie breaker - although Simons and O'Brien both had a total of 80 points.

O'Brien had the most impressive physique on stage and was the most conditioned athlete as well. Amy Haddad also looked nice with a very long, lean physique and made an impressive showing with her fourth place finish.

New pro Kendra Elias challenged Simons' flexibility with a nicely choreographed routine that showed her great stage presence and Kim Lyons played to the home crowd with her Dallas Cowboys themed football routine.

Angie Semsch took seventh and if it were not for her hang up during the 45-second round, might have cracked an Olympia qualification. Sabrina Gibson took eight and Amy Huber ninth while Donna Jones rounded out the top ten.

Sandra Wickham from Canada took 11th and had some of the highest jumps in the competition while Summer Montabone and Karen Walcott tied for 12th and Shannon Dey and Sandi Ward completed the field.

Judging for the Pro Figure competition was pretty spot on except for a few athletes who were overlooked. One in particular was Lithuanian Inga Neverauskaite. Neverauskaite ended up finishing in 17th place but really should have been in the top ten easily. With sharp conditioning, clean lines and a striking look, she was easily the most underrated athlete. That often seems to be the case tough for the foreign athletes, and many of the lower placings went to non-North Americans.

At the top end of the scoresheets though was standout Valerie Waugaman. From what we understand, Waugaman actually was at the show just to watch but was convinced to compete once she was in Dallas. She has incredible stage presence and has that extra something that transcends the sport and could gain mainstream popularity. She placed second to perhaps figure's hottest rising star, Amanda Savell.

Starting the season off in the NPC and quickly taking title after title, Savell made her pro debut earlier and impressed immediately just a few days after turning pro and quickly added a pro victory to her growing resume. Look for Savell, a former bodybuilder to be impressive at the Olympia.

The final Olympia qualifying spot went to Monica Guerra who's always had some great genetics and lines, but finally got the placing she deserved. She edged out fitness transfer Julie Lohre who was thrilled with her placing and would have made for an interesting story if she had qualified for the Figure O.

Two Canadians followed with Jane Awad and her class leading calves beating out the ageless Elaine Goodlad. Christine Wan looked extremely sharp herself and followed the two Canucks in sevevnth.

Eighth place went to Abby Duncan who has a really impressive v-taper and although she's a shorter competitor, should be able to qualify for the Olympia when she comes in a shade tighter. Home town favorite Amy Peters took ninth and California's Chrissy Garcia rounded out the top ten.
