2005 Emerald Cup Contest Report

Bellevue, WA, USA - Professional Fitness made it's debut in the Pacific Northwest with an outstanding lineup of nearly 20 of the top fitness pros but it was local Tanji Johnson who stole the limelight. With a strong physique and solid routine, Johnson beat out a strong class that included perennial challenger Tracey Greenwood, but it was a breakout contest for a few pros.
Julie Childs and Kim Lyons cracked the top four and Childs was visibly excited about her placing and subsequent Olympia qualification.
However there were several injuries that took out a few athletes including Terry Mooney and Rosi Mena. Both hurt themselves during their routines and Mooney was frustrated since she was just coming off being injured at the Olympia last October. Despite that, Mooney still managed to place an impressive sixth.
One of the surprises of the show was the re-emergence of Christina Summers(formerly Homan). Summers brought a very chiseled physique onto the stage with perhaps the best conditioning as did Sandy Grant who was completely overlooked. Grant should have easily been top ten, but was placed much lower. Lea Waide had a strong routine but also did not place highly.
In the end, the pro fitness competition was a great addition to the show, although the entirety of the Friday portion of the weekend ended up taking up in excess of ten hours.
In the amateur fitness and figure, there were some scoring issues but the competition itself was quite impressive. From the number of figure athletes and the quality of the top women, it could have easily been a pro qualifier considering the quality and numbers that compete at other national level shows. In the end it was Anna Larsson who took the overall edging out Amanda Savell and the other class winners. Savell is riding good momentum coming off her Orange County win and should be able to join the pro ranks later this year.
Some of the notables from the various classes include Michelle Flake who showcased nice muscularity and defniition but didn't have the genetic structure to take the overall from Larsson. Tracee Simpson also looked great. She just needs to tighten up a bit and she'll place higher as well as a slightly darker tan on stage.
Stacy Clary also looked fantastic with great stage presence and shapes. Like Simpson, coming in a bit tighter will improve her placings. Shelly Taucher looked strong again and is one of the more muscular figure competitors but carries the muscle well and thus took third in her class.
In fitness Tammie Ough took the overall and short class. She was chased by Rose Hendricks and Amy Fraser. Fraser has competed nationally and should do well with her energetic routine and compact physique. The tall champion was Bridgette Murray who has great genetics and shapes. She wasn't as cut as Ough and Jennifer Cassety was in incredible shape. Cassety has improved her physique and routine and although the judges didn't place her as high, should make an impact on the national stage.
Saturday was time for the bodybuilders and probably the most welcome thing may have been the fact that the day was streamlined since there wouldn't have to be switching from figure to fitness to bodybuilding and back.
The Emerald Cup has had a history of fine champions from Shelly Beattie to Nikki Fuller to Kirsten Haug so the bar was set high for the athletes this year.
Overall though, the numbers were down so hopefully next year there will be more athletes gunning for the title. However, the overall champion was the enthusiastic Millie Cleveland who came all the way from the Carribean to compete. The Emerald Cup always has international draw, and Cleveland was the perfect example.
In the lightweights, the definite winner was Laurie Burdett who was ripped. She beat out Tara Van Hoosen and several others for the class.
Cleveland won the middleweights and edged out the taller Meredith Berthelson. Berthelson has very nice shapes and a small waist so with a little more muscle, will be someone to keep an eye out for. Third went to the popular Wendy Lindquist who is one of the top crossover athletes with the nice balance that can work with both figure and bodybuilding.
Sheri Rigdon took fourth and in fifth was Susan Mathison who has very nice abs and could be a future star if she sticks with it.
The heavyweights was the smallest class with just Evelynn Johnston entering the class late to make it interesting. Johnston did the show as a bodybuilder last year, but initially was only competing in figure. Her crossover though resulted in a class win as she beat out the impressive and thickly muscled Sanne Moelgaard. Moelgaard will look very good if she can tighten up as she already has the required mass and just needs to be able to showcase it more effectively.
