2006 NPC Nationals Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships
November 10-11 , 2006 - by Hans Klein, photos by gene x hwang

Miami, FL , USA - A total of 77 female bodybuilders competed for four pro cards in this year’s Nationals - the second highest number ever – which were held in everyone’s favorite location for a bodybuilding show, Miami Beach.

Galina SerdtsevWith 17 competitors, the lightweight class was one of the most competitive in a long time. The first callout at the pre-judging at the art deco Jackie Gleason Theater was Tera Guzman, Jamie Troxel, Barbara Fletcher and Galina Serdtsev. Barbara looked incredible, having added seven pounds of quality muscle to her already unbelievably thick physique and also came in in as good condition as at the USA in 2005, where she won the class. It was difficult to say who had it – it was essentially a choice between Barbara’s sheer muscle, Tera Guzman’s symmetry and Jamie Troxel’s x-shape. The outstanding newcomer was Renee Oppedisano of Florida, who looked gorgeous, with great shape and a detailed back.

The big news in the middleweights – another extremely competitive class - was the return of 28 year-old golden girl Lisa Bickels. Lisa had taken third in the middleweights at the 2004 USA, her national-level debut, and seemed to have a big future ahead of her in bodybuilding, but then quit and switched to figure. Now living in Las Vegas, there had been rumors for a while that she was planning to come back to bodybuilding. She came in in great condition at 5-foot-3 and 124 pounds, with great shape and width, although her legs were not quite as big as some of the other middleweights.

britt miller tina chandlerThe two pre-show favorites, 22 year-old Britt Miller and Tina Chandler, both looked beautiful onstage, but this time some of the other girls in the class were just bigger – in particular Jennifer Sedia of Texas (2nd behind Tina at the USA in July) and Yahaira Agosto Vives of Puerto Rico, who were both huge and thick, with flaring lats and quads. For the first comparison the judges put Lisa in the middle, along with Jennifer, Yahaira, Britt and Michelle Morrison, then put Yahaira and Lisa back in line and called out Tina and Tammy Burdeski.

Once again a lot of the pre-show hype had centred on the light-heavies and in particular on Debi Laszewski and Elena Seiple. Debi – whose second place at Nationals last year was the big controversy of the show – was extremely confident coming into this show and said she had brought her lats out and her waist in. Meanwhile the word was that Elena (3rd last year), who weighed in at 136 pounds, was in the best shape of her life too.

As expected, they both looked incredible onstage. Sure enough, Debi’s v-taper seemed much better than last year and although she wasn’t quite as shredded as in Atlanta, she was still ripped. Elena was also on, with that same incredible thickness and much better presentation than last year.

kristy hawkins ripped glutesWhat no-one had quite anticipated was how awesome Kristy Hawkins was going to look. Kristy has been improving year by year since she started competing at the national level in 2003 and looked awesome last year in Atlanta, where she took fourth. But this year, prepped by Ed and Betty Pariso, she was something else. Her legs and glutes were totally striated – even more so, in fact, than Debi’s had been the year before. As she turned around and hit back poses, you could hear the whole audience say, “Look at her ass!”

It was immediately obvious that Debi, Elena and Kristy were the top three, although Holly Geersen (prepped by Robin Parker), Angie Salvagno and Amy Neil also looked great. The surprise of the class was 24 year-old Casey Daugherty of Florida, who had only qualified for Nationals the weekend before. At 5-foot-3 and 131 pounds, she also instantly looked like top five material.

The judges called out Debi, Kristy and Elena for the first comparison, putting Debi in the middle first but then switching them around in turn.

After they were done with the other comparisons, they brought the three of them out again and compared them again. It was pretty amazing to see Kristy, who is still only 26 years-old, standing next to thirtysomething veterans Debi and Elena and matching them for muscle maturity and conditioning.

However, last year the judges seemed to think Debi’s condition was too much, so the question was, what would they do with Kristy this time?

The heavyweights was the biggest class with a whopping 25 competitors. The favorite was Lora Ottenad of Seattle, who a lot of people in the sport feel should have won her pro card all the way back in 2000, when she won the heavyweights at the USA but missed out on the overall. After placing second behind Sherry Smith at the North Americans in September, this was her tenth national-level show. Onstage at 5-foot-6 and 167 pounds, she looked as huge and incredible as always and got the first callout, followed by Sheila Bleck and Bev DiRenzo.

gale frankie kris murrellJody May, who took second last year and was the other pre-show favorite, looked beautiful but at 166 pounds wasn’t quite lean enough this time.

Florida girl Kris Murrell also looked great competing among national-level heavyweights for the first time, and if she comes in slightly harder, especially in her legs, she will easily break the top three. It was also cool to see Nursel Gurler, now living in Santa Fe, back onstage again. Weighing in at 159 pounds, she was around four pounds heavier than when she last competed at Nationals in 2001 and looked as good as ever.

Sadly, only the top five got to do their posing routines at the night show.
In the lightweights, the judges went with Jamie Troxel, with Barbara in second and Tera third. In the middles, Jennifer Sedia was announced in fourth place – a surprise given the comparisons, which seemed to suggest she was in the running for the class. Britt Miller took third, Yahaira second, and Lisa Bickels won in her first show back as a bodybuilder.

The excitement level went up a notch when the light-heavies came on. Amy Neil took fifth and Angie fourth. That left, as the top three, Debi, Elena and Kristy, who held hands onstage as they awaited the results and everyone in the audience sat on the edge of their seats. Third place was Kristy and second – yet again – was Elena. After missing out last year, it was great to see Debi finally get her pro card in her home state of Florida.

In the heavyweights, it was Sheila Bleck in third, Bev DiRenzo in second and Lora – another athlete long overdue a pro card - in first. After a very quick posedown, she was also announced as the overall winner. The “Washington monument”- as emcee Lonnie Teper called her - was in tears as she hit poses for the photographers.
