Elena Seiple
Elena Seiple - by genex by gene x hwang - November 2000

The 2000 Nationals were near home for Elena Seiple and provided extra incentive for the national-level amatuer to do well, with the support of her husband and friends.

When asked about her support group, Seiple says "My friends like it. People I know do not say too much, they accept me for it. But come show time they realy support me!"

And that includes her husband, who she got married to in April (of 2000).

"I started going to the gym in 1997 and I saw a guy who was shredded. I thought, 'Wow a real bodybuilder!' I was amazed. I went home and told my dad.

"He was awesome this guy. About five or six-and-a-half months later, I competed in my first show. I finally got up enough nerve to talk to this guy and he and I decided to compete in a show in November, so we trained together a little there," she added.

We became the best of friends . In July of 1999 he asked me to marry him . He proposed to me in the gym where we met. He is a wonderful man. I could not have gotten better!"

With such strong support from someone who understands the sport and what it takes to succeed, Seiple was extra driven and coming into the 2000 NPC Nationals, was in the best shape of her life, which has been a life full of athletics.

"I was always athletic. But genetically I had biceps (small at that time). I played soccer in college as well, and was always one of the strongest on the team. I admired bodybuilers and wanted to do it someday."

That day has already come and her goals have now been elevated.

"I would like to some day get my pro card. But even more so I want to help the sport. I want to get more women excited about it. I want them to see that you can still be a woman and a bodybuiler at the same time. I want to help get the sport back on its feet and see more female competitors out there," added Seiple.

But that's not the only thing driving her. The sport continues to grow, and for any individual, there really is no point of perfection.

"My drive is the fact that I love to do it. My husband also competes and he gives me inspiration. My role models are Kim Chivesky and many other female bodybuilders. I want to be able to get my body to its best someday. That is what drives me."

During the offseason, Seiple's routine helps her maintain a good balance so that during contest prep, there isn't as much of a shock to her system.

"Well , I still eat pretty clean and train 4-5 times a week. I do not get too heavy. This year I am about 12 pounds from competition weight. I train heavy but keep my reps to 12-15 reps and really concentrate on form. I eat six times a day but I limit the cardio. It kicks in more come dieting time," she says.

And what weights does she use while training?

On the bench I am not a big bencher, but I can do 70 pound dumbell presses. For squats 285 is my max there, but I train around 235. Shoulder presses - ugh - another not favorite, I can press 45 pound dumbells, but do more cable work there. For bicep curls I can curl 40 pound dumbells and for dips/pull-ups I can do 12 pullups but do not do too many dips.

"Overall, though my back and biceps are what people notice the most.

"I love being strong. But I am not really after how strong I can get. I am more after how I can better my physiquie. We do not get judged on what we can lift, rather it is how we look. And I would rather look great than be strong!" Seiple adds.

Of course all of the training doesn't leave time for much else. Spirituality is important to Seiple and she uses that to help guide her.

"On weekends I go to church and on Wednesdays evening for prayer meeting. I keep God first over bodybuilding. The day that it takes over, is the day that I will have to quit. But I do not plan on letting that happen."

But with all that being said, Seiple adds "Bodybuilding is a 24 hour a day sport, so I like when I can just relax."
