Danyella Wisehart
by gene x hwang - August 2001

Indiana may not be known for much more than corn and being plain and flat, but the state has produced it's share of luminaries like James Dean, David Letterman and Larry Bird, but one of the newest faces to emerge on the bodybuilding scene is Danyella Wisehart who now makes her home in Northern California.

Although she has only been training for three years, she's already won some impressive titles like taking the NPC California Championships in 2000 and 2001. In such a short time, she has definitely made an impact, and was interested in the sport by a co-worker and professional bodybuilder herself, Ericca Kern.

"I was one of those ´skinny-fat´ girls with bad self-esteem. I knew that I wanted to be in better shape so I joined the local gym and started lifting weights. I moved here from Indiana so I was not exposed to a lot of bodybuilding there, so I would have to say that Ericca was someone I looked up to because after I moved to California I would come to Champion Nutrition to see my boyfreind and I would see her and she looked great!"

So what does someone who's trained less that five years, and already won one of the toughest state titles do next?

"I am focusing on finishing my B.A. in Businees Marketing. I love bodybuilding and working out because I love the way I look and feel about myself. I have a better self-image and I am healthier than I have ever been."

But Wisehart is quick to add with a smile, "I think I may try the figure competitions - who knows?"

Of course with a training regimen like she currently has, her physique is well ahead of what most figure competitors are gracing the stage with. In the off-season she trains five days a week with no cardio and keeps her workouts to about 45 minutes, followed by a post-workout drink.

"I try to keep my bodyfat at about 10% in the off-season so I eat low carbs with high protein and fat," adds Wisehart. When she's in the gym, she does some impressive lifts which she gets a kick out of. She squats 225 lbs., does military presses with 95 lbs. and bicep curls with 50 lbs. all for sets of eight reps. However, it's the pull ups that she enjoys the most.

"I usually do three sets of 10 and it is funny to see everyone in the gym watch in amazement that I can do so many - it is really funny! I love being strong, I think weight training makes you strong on the outside and the inside. No one really picks on me anymore. I got picked on a lot before I was weight training," she adds.

When asked what her muscle measurements are, Wisehart responds with a smile saying: "36-27-36, does anything else matter?"

Even with such perfect proportions, Wisehart can find that people can be insecure around her.

"I find that being in better shape than most of the male population, that it can be hard to get a date or get asked out because men are intimidated. Of course, there are those people that may think women shouldn't be muscular or they may be jealous and try to bring you down, so you have to be confident in the way you look and feel."

Fortunately like many athletes, Wisehart's family and friends are totally supportive of her. She also gets plenty of support from her workplace, Champion Nutrition, in Concord, CA where she has been the purchasing manager for almost two years. Champion is very involved in the health and fitness industry, and is proud to sponsor Wisehart in all of her competitions.

"My family thinks that I look great and its awesome. My mom is really proud of me and shows off my pictures to her friends. She is so cute."

And it's not just her mom who thinks she looks great, as judges have noted that the young upstart from the midwest is definitely primed to make a splash at the national level, or maybe even on stage doing quarter turns as one of the best built figure competitors. Everyone will have to wait to see what move Wisehart makes next.
