Western Collegiate

Pasadena,
CA, USA - With changing the name of the show from the California Collegiate
to the Western Collegiates, Lonnie Teper's show promised to bring in more
competitors from other states, but only Arizona represented when it came
down to show time. In the bodybuilding there were only a couple competitors
- one in the heavyweights and one in the middleweights.
Lightweight
Suzette Garcia, at 4'6" was not dwarfed by the heavyweight Olene
Hudson at all, and in fact her tigher conditioning and muscularity easily
powered her to the overall title. It was Garcia's first competition and
she looks to have a promising future.
There
was only one fitness competitor, so Denise Shultz won her class, but also
competed in the figure competition in the tall class. She placed third
behind Candace Lee and Neal Arnold. Arnold has a good look and with some
more muscularity can proceed to compete at larger shows and regionals.
In
the short class, Erica Samy was the best conditioned athlete, coming off
her showing at the Junior Nationals the weekend
before. The top three though were withing a single point of each other,
so the competition was very tight. Samy edged out Patty Cottrell who's
shape was excellent, while Debra Gallegos was also lean and had strong
lines.
Stephanie
Yelkinoff took 4th and presented a nice, compact physique while hometown
favorite Lisa Gates, a biology major from Pasadena City College took 5th
and Trina Haida took 6th.
Although
a bit disappointing in it's volume of competitors, it promises to be a
show that should continue to grow, and hopefully the crop of aspiring
collegiate bodybuilders will show up at next years competition. As it
stands now, you are almost guaranteed a trophy.
