The 2000 San Francisco Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships were held on Nob Hill at the Masonic Auditorium on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The prejudging kicked off after noon and the women's competition was slated after all of the men, and therefore finished up close to 4:00 p.m.
There were a total of six competitors in both the fitness and bodybuilding combined.
In the fitness competition, there was just one competitor, Virginia Betley, who was popular with the crowd, and seemed to enjoy flexing during her routine. Although she injured her elbow, she did perform her routine in the prejudging, but during the evening finals, only was able to come out to accept her award, and national qualification.
Within the bodybuilding portion of the show, the lightweight and middleweight classes both had two competitors while there was one heavyweight. During the prejudging the heavyweight competitor, Connie Holtz, was compared and called out with the middleweights, but at the finals was singled out as a heavyweight.
In the lightweights it was Nancy Mimms, who was slightly leaner than Kym Fortino who took the class. Although Fortino seemed to have better mass overall, the judges went with the better conditioned athlete.
In the middleweights, the competition was close. However, eventual overall winner Ann Venenciano took the class with slightly better mass and symmetry than Kim Matsool (sp?). Matsool had good presence on stage, along with a well-conditioned physique, but it was the fuller muscle that Anonciano carried that took the class.
With a little more size and muscle maturity, Matsool should place well.
The heavyweight winner, Connie Holtz, had great abs and was fairly hard. Her symmetry is solid, and with time, her improvements and added mass will carry well on her frame.
The audience also had some solid looking folks, such as Michelle Woo. Pictured at right is Woo, who will be competing in the Ed Corney Classic on October 28th.
As a whole, the competition was light, and it would have been nice to see more competitors. At least it wasn't like the men's show, which in one of the classes had a severely under-dieted competitor, who was probably less lean than this reporter - and anyone who knows my diet knows what that means.
