Mary Lynne Mackenzie
Untitled Document

Canadian Dynamo Mary Lynne Mackenzie

Fans of bodybuilding know that Canada has put out some impressive pros, but because of the very limited number of pro cards handed out each year, there are a tremendous number of athletes in the country who are still amateur but have fantastic physiques. A perfect example is Mary Lynne Mackenzie who has been competing for years and is a top national level contender.

marylynne mackenzieShe was born in Canada and has lived in Woodstock, Toronto and is currently living in Niagara Falls. She practices Traditional Chinese Medicine and does quite a bit of personal training as well when she's not preparing for a show.

Now a veteran of the iron, her beginnings with lifting were for improving her rowing skills and performance.

"Although the first couple of years of my weight training was predominantly sports oriented, I have now been lifting for 28 years. "I've had a very athletic background which began pretty much as soon as I was able. I have done swimming, figure skating, ballet & jazz, a little gymnastics, baseball, basketball, volleyball, track & field, rowing, and finally bodybuilding.

"It was rowing that introduced me to weight training - and my desire to be as competitive as possible - that made me pursue it. I was 17 when I began lifting weights and I've been hooked ever since!"

When Mackenzie was 19 or 20, she began to entertain the notion of competing in bodybuilding.

"I remember seeing Lisa Lyons and Kike Elomaa in the magazines and thinking they looked magnificent. I entered my first contest when I was  21 in London Ontario.

"Although I have always worked out consistently, my competitive phases have been very on and off. I have won four overall titles and a first in the Canadian Bodybuilding Masters in the past."

Mackenzie no longer competes at the Masters level, but her current goal in bodybuilding is "to try to continually improve my physique as much as possible, for as long as possible. If I am able to become a pro, I would most definately, love to compete as a pro!"

"I usually train six days a week for an average of about two hourrs (more during contest prep). I normally start my exercises with lighter weights doing high reps, and work up to heavier weights for lower reps.

mary lynne mackenzie"I think I train relatively heavy, but I do not train for or attempt maximum lifts. I like to use a respectable amount of weight and keep my sets between 10-20 reps. I do perform most of the traditional lifts, but am more likely to be seen doing a more challenging variation of them," she adds.

Those who have seen Mackenzie off-season or at a show note that Mary Lynne is almost always vascular and in shape.

"I stay fairly lean throughout the year - I imagine partly because I prefer to eat healthy food (although, I really do eat quite a lot of it!) - and because I am a hard gainer. (Admittedly, though, I do favour the leaner look!)"

Her arms are often noted as her best bodypart but others would say it's her back. Her weight stays between 145 and 160 lbs.

"I am comfortable in my skin and do enjoy being strong" she adds. Her fans are also very encouraging and complimentary about her physique.

"They ask advice, take me seriously and respect me," she says.

2007 will see Mackenzie back on stage most likely. When she's up there, she's a strong poser and always comes in dialed in and ripped. Surprisingly, she admits that her least favorite pose is the standing relaxed pose.

"I never feel I look good in that pose, I guess I need to work on it harder!"

From the basis of the hard work she's put in over the years we have not doubts that the next time she's on stage Mary Lynne Mackenzies relaxed pose will be hard to miss and will hopefully get her a deserving callout.
