Gina Davis

by gene x hwang - December 2002

In bodybuilding the focus is supposed to be on the physique, but it's often hard to separate a person's body and musculature from their face and personality, and Gina L. Davis is one woman who makes it hard not to notice her impressive beauty.
One of the things that Davis prides herself on is her femininity, and more specifically, being able to "maintain a very feminine look along with developing a level of muscularity that I can be proud of."

From the response she has been getting, she should definitely be proud of what she's accomplished so far. The 33-year-old recently got married to Kevin Davis (a fellow NPC competitor) and lives and trains in Houston, TX. For the past 11 years, she's been training, but only competed in her first show three years ago where she won the heavyweight and overall, and most recently competed at the 2002 NPC Nationals placing a very respectable 13th in the heavyweight class.

"I definitely want to promote a more feminine look in the female bodybuilding world. How? By being a walking advertisement for it. Additionally, I am talking with some people concerning my future in terms of marketing my look in the future. There are lots of opportunities out there just waiting to be explored.

"After competing in Nationals, I have a new determination to see exactly where I fit in so to speak. To borrow a phrase from a friend, I want women to look at me and see my look as attainable and attractive and men to look at me and think I have National-level muscularity and wouldn't mind dating me as well! (thanks Jeff!) That's figuratively speaking since I am happily married to my gorgeous husband Kevin Davis who is a Chiropractor in the Houston area. "

At 5'5" tall, Davis weighs in at 180 lbs. during the off-season, but likes to take the stage around 145 lbs. At Nationals she was one of the more talked about athletes, especially considering her placement and the level of quality throughout the class and competition.

"I was thrilled to be there standing next to girls that I had only read about in magazines or seen on the internet. The show was run very well - they truly look out for the competitors. I felt very proud to have brought my personal best to the stage without compromising my principles or sacrificing my aesthetics. I was overwhelmed with all of the positive feedback I received for that very thing," said Davis.

It's no wonder she's been getting such postive feedback. With a good structure and nice muscularity, Gina sports 16" arms, 24" quads, 16" calves and a 42" chest. She usually trains doing three to four sets of 10-12 reps each. Some examples of some exercises she performs include squats with 315 lbs., flat bench presses with 205 lbs., dumbbell curls with 50 lb. dumbells, and 100 lb. barbell curls.

"I have always found a muscular physique to be very appealing. Once I joined a gym and found that my body responded well to the training, I decided to take it to another level and have enjoyed the process and outcome. I always have to mention the inspiration that I found in Cory Everson. She epitomizes female bodybuilding to me and continues to be my idol in the sport."

Hopefully Davis will enjoy similar success to Everson both on stage as well as off. Bodybuilding is her primary focus though for now, and Davis anticipates continuning to compete.

"I treat it like any other sport I have been involved in. I condition my body for an eventual competition in the end where I can see how I measure up to my peers. I see improvements in my physique each time which is exciting and gives me a real sense of control over my body."

If Davis continues to control her body in the direction it's already going in, look out for her to do some damage the next time out. With buzz that's just keeps on growing, she should be one of the athletes that can help promote women's bodybuilding and offer up a great total package for many aspiring athletes.
