Amanda Savell, 1978-2008

Article and Photography by James Cook

During a photoshoot here in Venice, CA. I was sharing the gym with a photographer who was busy in another corner shooting men for a popular European magazine. Afterwards he came to me and said, "Good Lord, who was that girl you were shooting? She's beautiful!"
"Amanda Savell" I replied.
He shook his head. "Honestly, I haven't seen a girl like that come onto the scene in 10 years".

Yes, once and a while, someone comes along who pumps new energy into the sport of women's bodybuilding. A person with a unique, "signature" look who inspires other women to pick up the weights, while capturing the hearts of fans all over the world. Introducing Amanda Savell. This 25 year old phenom from Texas has been training for 3 years now and is relatively new to the sport. The 2003 Excalibur held in Los Angeles was only her third show and she did not even make the top 5 in her heavyweight class. "It was a learning experience and I got to meet a lot of great folks." She says, "It also gave me an idea as to what the judges are looking for."

What the judges are looking for and what the fans are looking for can sometimes be two very different things.

Born in Nashville, TN. she has had a tennis racquet in her hands since she was 4 years old and began tournaments at age 6. Ranked the nations top 5 (for ages 14-16) while being ranked number one for the state of Florida. At 16, she tore her ACL and began rehab. Recovery came quickly as she then went on to earn a 4 year tennis scholarship to Texas Tech University. "I lifted weights during college, but it wasn't until afterwards that I became really interested in bodybuilding."

This 5' 6", this rising star competes at 136lbs and is about 145lbs offseason. "My goal is to stay as feminine as I can. I want to put on a little more size and refine what I have for the future. I do like to lift heavy though!" she adds.

DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE BEFORE BODYBUILDING?
I have always been very active and competitive playing a variety of sports, but tennis was my life. I began playing tennis at the age of 4, and ranked in the nations top 5 ages 14-16, while being ranked # 1 in Florida. When I was 16 I tore my ACL and began the rehab road. I then earned a 4 year scholarship to Texas Tech University to play tennis. I did very well at Texas Tech, but it was there that I learned about being in shape and weight training. My love for lifting weights grew into bodybuilding.

SELF-DESCRIPTION OF PERSONALITY?
I have a very big heart and I am compassionate for friends and family. I am laid back and easy going with dedication and determination, but I will tell it how it is or what I think about it, I will not hide my feelings.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CONTEST LIKE?
My first contest was exciting. I love being in front of people on the main stage having everyone looking at you admiring what you have accomplished. I was not nervous at all I was just so happy with what I was able to shape my body into in so little time (considering i decided to do the show less than 12 weeks before it started)
I had a great time.

WHAT ARE YOUR COMPETITIVE GOALS?
My competitive goals are to win nationals and earn my Pro Card. Would love to compete at the Olympia, but more importantly I want to stay focused on what I want my body to look like, and prove that someone with beauty and feminine looks can have muscle and succeed in women's bodybuilding.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO GET INTO BODYBUILDING?
I have always loved lifting weights and training my body, but I was motivated by the idea of having a finely sculpted body, like a piece of art, and the drive and dedication it took to get there. My sister Brandy, who works in the fitness industry, convinced me that I had what it takes to succeed and motivated me to go as far as I could. My entire life has been surrounded by being in shape, my parents owned gyms when I was a child, my father has never missed a day of working out and I look up to him for that.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST OBSTACLE TO SUCCESS?
My biggest obstacle is being secure within myself, and proving to myself that I can do this and that I am different from the next competitor. I am more secure with each show I do, so now my biggest obstacle is just getting my face and name out to the bodybuilding world and letting them know I am here to stay.

FAVORITE HOBBY?
Just being with my family is number one to me, and being able to spend quality time with the husband.

FAVORITE DIET FOOD?
oatmeal mixed with protein powder (banana flavor)

FAVORITE CHEAT FOOD?
sushi, pancakes, peanut butter, cake, and chipolte burritos

FAVORITE AEROBICS?
running

FAVORITE MUSIC OR ARTIST?
rap/techno-- Limp Bizkit and Busta Rhymes

FAVORITE MOVIES?
Rudy, Remember the Titans, Fast and the Furious

FAVORITE T.V. SHOW?
Friends, Will and Grace

FAVORITE FITNESS COMPETITOR YOU ADMIRE?
Monica Brant and Jenny Worth, two very beautiful competitors

TRAINING GOALS (HOW DO YOU WANT TO LOOK IN THE FUTURE?
I want to always have my feminine look is the most important, muscle can be beautiful on the right person.

FAVORITE BODYBUILDERS?
Valentina Chepiga and Karina Nascimento (my training partner)

WHY DID YOU START WEIGHT TRAINING?
I started weight training for tennis, but it wasn't until college when we had good trainers that I realized the importance and possibilities of weight training, that is when I fell in love with muscle and strength. Its kinda funny but my family no matter where we went the first thing we all did was work out together. It has just been apart of life to me. My mother and father have both been a big inspiration to me.

WHEN DO YOU KNOW YOU'RE IN SHAPE?
I know I am in shape when I can fit into my favorited blue dress, and turn heads everywhere I go.

IF YOU ONLY HAD ONE EXERCISE TO DO WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Bicep curls

WHICH BODYPART DO YOU ENJOY TRAINING THE MOST?
Shoulder and/or Legs

WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR COACH?
Herman Steele, my trainer, has taught me so much, but the one thing that has been most valuable he has taught me is that the heart will seperate you from the others and determine how in shape you are. He has changed my whole outlook on the sport and what it takes. Thank you Herman!

WHAT'S THE BEST PART OF COMPETITION FOR YOU?
The best part of competition for me is the recognition of all the hard work and dedication that I have done in preperation for a show. Having people see what I have been able to accomplish and knowing that one day I can make a difference in bodybuilding. The other is knowing my family will always be right behind me till I accomplish my goal.

WHAT TYPE OF CLOTHING DO YOU LIKE TO WEAR, THAT MAKES YOU LOOK GOOD?
Around the house I love to wear little boy shorts and tank tops, at the gym sports bra's and spandex shorts, but mostly I love to wear langerie and tight backless dresses

WHAT STRESSES YOU OUT?
I procrastinate to the last minute to do something knowing that I don't have much time to do something, and keeping our house clean, I am a clean freak, and my husband makes a mess everywhere he goes.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE SPORT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
That women's Bodybuilding gets more publicity in magazines and more sponsors. There are a lot of beautiful women in Bodybuilding, they should be used a lot more to promote the sport.

WHEN YOU'RE ALONE, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
I love to take a long bubble bath listening to music, and spend time with my husband watching a movie or going to dinner. I am a home body renting movies and curling up to a fire is my kinda evening.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO FIVE YEARS FROM NOW?
I want to be a force to be reconded with in bodybuilding, I want to be competing on the pro level, compete at the Olympia, and have my picture in magazines, ads, and have a well known sponsor. I want to be step out for women's bodybuilding and the sport to prove that you can have muscles and feminine beauty all in the same package.
